You’ve probably heard of email blasts, and you may relate them to the dreaded spam, or UBE: unsolicited bulk email. I wondered, when composing this post, where the term spam came from. Leave it to computer geeks to give UBE a slang name based on a Monty Python skit — and an extremely obnoxious one, at that. See the video below if you’re brave enough.
But spam aside, let’s talk about email blasts. If you send email blasts to a group of your clients who have given you their email addresses, and the blast has an obvious “opt out” feature, it’s not spam. This type of email blast is professional and acceptable. It follows all protocol.
Why would you need an email blast? Well, dental newsletters are great to send out quarterly. People might even read them! But monthly or weekly newsletters will probably get quickly filtered to the email trash bin. Your patients just don’t have time to muddle through all that text, and honestly, they aren’t that interested in dentistry. Email blasts, however, are short and sweet bursts of information that can be read quickly. Sending out an email blast every few weeks is a great way to stay in front of your patients between their dental visits. They’ll see your name again and again, and that’s awesome. Even better, if they find your email blasts helpful, they’ll actually read them.
So what are some good topics for an email blast? A contest announcement or contest winner is good. Holiday greetings with a team photo are always nice, too. You might provide information about a local event, special offer in your area, or even kudos to the high school basketball team. If you maintain a blog, consider sending out your two most popular blog posts for the month.
At MDPM, we offer a Have a Blast package in which we send out two email blasts a month to an email list our client provides. We manage the email list, opt ins, opt outs, and reports that show how many blasts were opened or forwarded, how many links were clicked on, etc. In addition, we can place an opt in pop-up window on your MDPM blog — or we can send the code to your outside webmaster. The Have a Blast package is only available to clients who have an MDPM blog website. For more information, call Jill at 972-781-8861 or email info@moderndentalmarketing.com.
