Why do I need to brand myself? That completely depends on what you want out of your future. Some common reasons for self branding are:
- You’re an associate dentist or partner who will go into private practice at some point.
- You hope to become a speaker, consultant, author, or celebrity.
- You want a personal following in case you move your practice to a new location.
- You are a dental student who will practice with a group, as an assistant, or independently.
- You are a professional and deserve a professional identity. Your skills are transferable, but make sure that your name is transferable, as well.
All too often, we see partnerships dissolve. Dentists who worked under a practice name move on to establish a private practice of a new name, and they have no history of publicity. No one knows who they are. Imagine being in this situation, but having 400 Facebook fans and 1000 hits on your blog each month. Now that would give you a great place to start.
It’s about being smart and staying ahead of the game.
How do I brand myself as a professional? You can do it online. First of all, create a professional blog website and Facebook page. Separate your professional identity from your collegiate and personal identity.
Use professional photos of yourself. That’s not to say they can’t be dressy casual. For instance, if you went on a mission trip, definitely post the photos to show your philanthropic dedication. But temper the casual with the professional – a photo of yourself looking quite dapper. If you can acquire professional head shots, do it.
On your blog, post at least once a week. Write about dentistry, business, technology, and other professionals. Share your professional philosophy and experiences with readers.
Use your blog as a website. Include a page with your biography and CV. Add a page with your contact information. As stated earlier, throw in a page to highlight your volunteer work. You might also add letters of reference or testimonials, association memberships, and published articles. Prospective employers, as well as bankers and patients will Google you.
When do I start a self-branding campaign? Now. There’s no time like the present, and if you postpone self branding, it will go the way of cleaning the attic… you’ll never get around to it until it’s time to move on.
