Sometimes, even a well-meaning practice can find themselves facing a blacklist over their email blasts. An email blast can be a great way to communicate something important to your clients. In fact, we’ve used them before as a way of commenting on Google updates or other issues that our clients are curious (or worried!) about. However, if you don’t take the proper steps, you could find your practice being punished. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to avoid being blacklisted.
Have you ever received an email from a friend that appeared suspicious, but you opened the attachment anyway? I’m guessing nothing good came of it. As a result, ISPs are always a little wary of attachments, especially if they come from email blasts. As a result, we advise avoiding attachments and instead, if you need to direct a patient somewhere, include links.
Only Send to People Who Opt In
You should give people the option to opt into your email list. If they sign up, then by all means send them a blast. If not, then do not. If you send blasts to people that aren’t interested, you could end up on a blacklist. Instead, give people an option to sign up and make sure there are simple ways for people to opt out.
Clear Out Your Lists
You should also take time to reassess your blast list. You can keep track of how often people read your emails, or whether they click through and leave them unopened. You can then remove inactive email addresses from your list. Doing this makes it less likely that your blasts will be reported as spam.
