Over the years, we’ve discussed the frequency of blogging and correct keyword and link strategies, but what about other common mistakes when it comes to blogging? By understanding the do’s and don’ts of blogging, you can ensure you provide potential patients and searchers with a quality resource that accurately reflects your practice and philosophy — and helps you get found in search results by your target audiences.
Common Blogging Mistakes
- Creating off-topic content: No matter what you cover, your post should always have a way of connecting back to your main website and services. Even if you think the topic is interesting, if it can’t hold relevant links back to your main website or other posts then the content is off-topic. As a dentist, examples on-topic content include benefits of dental procedures/treatments, information about the services you offer, oral and overall health topics, community events in your area, and seasonal topics, such as back-to-school dental cleanings and checkups and brightening smiles during the summer.
- Not using pictures: Videos and/or images can break up the text and make your content more reader friendly. However, remember that your images should relate to the post, otherwise your post can seem unprofessional and scattered. A good rule of thumb is to stick to the 50/50 rule when it comes to text/images on web pages and blog posts.
- Making frequent errors: After you finish the first draft of your post, its important to read and reread it. Look for grammatical errors, missing and extraneous words, content flaws, and other mistakes. Don’t let your blog or website’s credibility suffer because of a typo. Users will notice, and so will Google.
- Not sharing on social media: Once you’ve created awesome content, you need to promote it to help it reach as many people as possible. Sure, you’re writing blogs for search engines, but you’re also writing for engagement. If you’re not sharing your blogs on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+, and LinkedIn, you’re missing out on an opportunity to get your brand in front of users and boost engagement/conversion. In a nutshell, sharing content increases the chances people will discover, click, and eventually find their way to your website.
- Not blogging frequently and regularly: As we’ve mentioned before, studies show that small companies (those with 1-25 employees) attract greater traffic and leads by blogging at least 16 per month. When it comes to blogging, consistency and frequency are key (as long as you’re producing quality, optimized, shareable content). When done correctly, blogging and content marketing is a time commitment.
- Not being responsive: Is your blog mobile friendly? If not, it should be to stay in Google’s good graces and adhere to current user experience (UX) standards. Many people now use their smartphones to look up businesses or services, so a non-mobile friendly site can turn off potential clients/patients fast.
- Using the wrong tone/voice: Often, your blog is the first impression a client/patient/customer will have of your business/practice. Your blog posts should come across as informative, authoritative, and professional, but also friendly and helpful. Your blog posts should match the quality of service your patients receive when they call and visit your office.
