Reputation Management for Dentists

One of our clients, a respected dental consultant, asked me how to know when testimonials are posted online about his clients. While there’s no surefire way to know everything that’s being posted and tweeted and whispered about you online, customized Google Alerts will give you an extra set of eyes.

Google Alerts is a tool that allows you to sign up for email notifications when Google indexes information. You determine the words that will trigger notifications. For instance, your name, practice name, address, and competitors/local colleagues are wise choices for Google Alerts.

How to Set Up Your Google Alerts

  • Go to
  • Query a word or phrase—your name, for instance.
  • Select the type of results for which you want notification (blogs, news, etc.).
  • Select how often you’d like notification (immediately, daily, weekly).
  • Select “best” or “all” results for your alerts.
  • Select the email address where you’d like to receive notifications.
  • Create your alert.
  • You can also manage alerts from this page.

How to Influence Testimonial Destinations

You can’t stop people from writing about you on Yelp!, Google Places, Yahoo, or other consumer review sites. You can, however, encourage patients whom you know will write positive reviews to leave their comments on your favorite review site. Here’s how:

  • On the testimonial page of your website, include a big button titled “leave your review here” and link it to your review site of choice.
  • Put up a poster in your office with a QR code linking to your review site of choice.
  • Put a QR code on your business cards linking to your review site of choice.

The Marketer’s Favorite Review Site

I prefer Google Places over all other consumer review websites. Google Places allows a business owner (dentist) to respond publicly to reviews. This means, if you get a positive review, you can say “thanks,” and on the flip side, if you get a negative review, you can post something like, “Dr. X here. I’m so sorry to hear that you were displeased with your visit. Please feel free to call the office and ask for me personally. I would like to hear your story so that I can do my best to address the situation. We have many happy clients that refer their friends and family, and I want to keep it that way. Please contact me so that we can talk. Thanks so much.” Then, even if the poster never calls your office, anyone who reads the negative review will see that you reached out to the poster and genuinely want to address their concern.
