So what is Google Goggles? Besides being a fun phrase, Google Goggles is a practical iPhone app that allows you to photograph virtually anything and immediately Google it. I found the app in an advertisement while watching the next arctic weather front on my iPhone, and I had a chance to play with it last night.
A photo of the Texas Rangers logo brought up related websites on a Google SERP (search engine results page). However, a photo of my husband’s small business logo brought up totally unrelated results. Even the Nike Swoosh and a black-and-white version of the Texas Rangers “T” logo brought bad results.
You Say You Want an Evolution
Sorry for that cheesy Beatles reference again. I just can’t help myself!
I want to encourage you to help Google Goggles evolve. We are in an exciting Internet age, and we can all take an active role in its development and success – or failure. Play along with this experiment and see what happens. I will lead by example.
1. Download the Google App to your iPhone
2. Open the app and use Google Goggles to…
Take a photo of your business card
Take a photo of your business sign
Take a photo of your logo
3. Upload all of these to your Google Places page.
About Google Places
If you’ve not claimed your Google Places listing, catch up! Google your dental practice now, click on Maps in the top left banner, then find your listing and claim it. Expect a phone call (immediately) or post card (2-3 weeks) to get your PIN, then verify the listing. After you verify, you can update. That’s when you need to add your new photos.
Every few weeks, set up an alert to remind yourself to go to Google Goggles, take a photo of your business card, sign, and logo, and see what turns up. You should have the option to rate your results with one to five stars. Be sure to rate them so that you can be part of the evolution.
The Long and Winding Road
My apologies. Let’s move on.
Google Goggles might not work well this month, this year, or even next year. In fact the Google Gods may scrap the project – or it could turn into the next big thing. Either way, Google will place another shiny object in our path soon. That you can count on.
